Today I learned · Effective 25 October 2026
This policy explains how MXSOFT LTD (“we”, “us”) handles information for Today I learned (TIL), the journal app and related services. Notes stay on your device unless you choose to share them, move them to another device, or use optional model features.
Who we are
Today I learned is published by MXSOFT LTD, a company registered in England (company number 16542987). Registered office: 150 Barton Village Road, Headington, Oxford, OX3 9NS, United Kingdom.
For privacy questions, contact hello@mxsoft.uk.
What stays on your device
By default, notes, collections, labels, and attachment references are stored in a local database on your phone. Photos, videos, and documents are read from the place you picked them; the app does not keep a second copy for everyday use. Local settings, session tokens, follow lists for this device, and reminder schedules also stay on the device.
Account information
If you create an account, we store:
- Email address — used to sign you in with a one-time code; not shown on shared pages
- Username and optional profile description — shown when you publish or share
- Optional profile photo
- Language preference
- Session credentials (stored hashed on the server)
We do not use passwords or social login providers.
What reaches our servers
- Sign-in. We email a short code via our email provider (Resend) and verify it on the server.
- Sharing. Sharing a collection with friends keeps a synced server copy for you and those people. Making a collection public keeps a synced copy that can appear in Discover and search.
- Device transfer. Moving notes to another device uploads a private copy (including file bytes when needed) until you clear it.
- Places. If you attach a place, you search via our API (Photon / Komoot). The name and coordinates you pick can be stored on the note and included when that note is shared or transferred.
- Support. Messages you send from the app are emailed to us with your account email as reply-to, plus basic app and device details.
- Follows and notifications. Public follows can use a device identifier. Signed-in follows, friend access, and in-app notifications (for example when a collection is shared with you) are stored on the server.
Model suggestions and safety checks
Optional topic and connection suggestions send note text to Mistral so categories or related collections can be suggested. That text is processed to provide the feature and is not kept as your journal on our servers. When you share, publish, or transfer content, we may send text or images to Mistral to check against our safety rules (including rules against sexual content involving minors). Content that fails those checks is refused or left out of the public copy.
Product analytics
The mobile app may send product events to Google Analytics (Firebase) and Meta so we can understand usage — for example first open, first sign-in, first note, each note saved, first public collection, and first Discover search. Those events do not include the text of your notes. Meta advertiser ID collection is turned off in our configuration.
Other processors
We use service providers to run Today I learned, including:
- Hosting and database (for example Railway and PostgreSQL)
- Email delivery (Resend)
- AI processing (Mistral)
- Place search (Photon / Komoot)
- Optional web search results in Discover (Brave Search), when enabled
- Analytics (Firebase / Google Analytics and Meta), as above
They process data on our instructions to provide these services.
Cookies and similar technologies
This privacy policy does not set tracking cookies. The mobile app stores session and preference data locally (including secure storage).
How we use information
We use information to:
- Provide sign-in, sync of shared or transferred content, Discover, and support
- Operate optional model suggestions and safety checks
- Understand product usage and improve reliability
- Protect the service and enforce our content rules
We do not sell your personal information. We do not use your notes for advertising.
Public content
Content you make public (collections, notes in them, username, profile description, and avatar) can be viewed by others and listed in Discover or search. Email addresses are not shown on shared pages. Private shares are limited to people you invite and are not listed in Discover.
Retention and deletion
Account data and shared or transferred copies remain while your account and those shares exist. You can delete your account in the app, which removes the server account (including username, shared collections, and follows) and clears notes for that account on that device. Local notes that were never uploaded are only on your device until you remove them or uninstall the app.
Children
Today I learned is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we will take appropriate steps to delete it.
Your choices
- Keep notes only on your device by not sharing, publishing, or transferring them
- Turn connection suggestions off in Settings
- Change who can access a private share, or stop publishing a collection
- Delete your account in the app
- Email us to ask about access or correction of account data we hold
International users
We may process and store information in the countries where we or our providers operate. If you use the service from the UK, EEA, or elsewhere, you can contact us about your privacy rights, including access and erasure where applicable under UK GDPR and related law.
Changes
We may update this policy from time to time. The effective date above will change when we do. Continued use of Today I learned after an update means you accept the revised policy.
